Remember that checking for bends or bows in the tube using traditional methods can take five to seven seconds before cutting starts. The traditional method of touch sensing is not as accurate as it was. This means you must compromise productivity in order to achieve accuracy. Of course, the fiber laser doesn’t need as much attention in terms of maintenance. It doesn’t require mirror cleaning and bellows checks that a CO2 laser cutting machine needs. A laser cutting machine can make a sheet of sheet metal in seconds. However, a laser tube cutting machine can achieve the same results. It is quite different from how it works.
A laser tube cutter machine does not come with standard material towers. Bundle loaders are the most efficient option for tube material handling. They feed one tube from each bundle to the tube laser through a singularizing device. This type of feeding mechanism is not suitable for open profiles such as channels or angles, since they are interlocked while inside a bundle and can't be released easily. Step loaders are used for open profiles. They sequence each section into the machine one at a while maintaining the correct orientation.
Another consideration is the fiber laser’s briefcase-sized modules—they allow for redundancy. If one module has a problem, the resonator doesn’t shut down completely. The fiber laser is redundant in a way that the other modules can produce more power temporarily to support the down module until repairs can be completed—which, by the way, can be done in the field. Other times the fiber resonator can continue producing reduced power until repairs can be made. Unfortunately, if a CO2 resonator has an issue, the entire resonator is down, not just in a reduced-power mode.
